Hundreds of protests expected across France, with shops, businesses and tourist sites closed – Europe live

France will deploy 70,000 officers around the country. Protests are also expected in Italy, Spain, Austria, Portugal, Albania and Ireland

Following last weekend’s unrest, authorities across France moved to try to restrict demonstrations, limiting gathering numbers and march routes and issuing blanket bans in some cities.

That led to groups seeking permission for “authorised” protests with mixed results. For example, in Paris, the leading trade union was granted permission for their march while the Yellow Vest demonstrators were denied.
